About Latvia

Latvia is officially known as the Republic of Latvia. It is situated in the Baltic region of Northern Europe. The total area of Latvia is around 64,589 sq kilometers. The capital of the country is Riga and the official language is Latvian.

History

It was in year 1918 when Republic of Latvia was founded. However on account of World War II, the independence of the country got interrupted. During the year 1940, Soviet Union took control over Latvian government. In year 1941, Nazi Germany invaded and occupied the country and later in 1944, it was again re-occupied by the Soviets for the next 50 years. The dissolution of Soviet Union in 1991 led to Latvia’s independence and it became a separate country with an identity of its own.

Geography

Latvia lies in the Northern Europe; between latitudes 55 degree and 58 degree North and longitudes 21 degree and 29 degree east. The largest lake of the country is Lubans and deepest lake being Dridzis.The country experiences mostly temperate climate. While the average temperature in winters is around – 6 degree Celsius, the average temperature in summers ranges from 19 degree Celsius to 35 degree Celsius. In winters, heavy snowfall is quite common in nearly all parts of the country. The country experiences fairly mild weather in Spring and Autumn seasons.

Latvijas Universitate (University of Latvia)

 

The Faculty of Medicine in University of Latvia was established in year 1919 to cater to the growing educational needs of the students. It is sufficient if the student has acquired a GRADE B in Cambridge First Certificate in English. Though Latvian is the native language professional courses are offered in Russian and English. A Latvian language test is mandatory for the overseas students.

Documents required

Certain documents are required for getting the visa which is mandatory for overseas study. For a Latvian student visa, the students need a letter of admission from the Latvian university. The confirmation of the fee payment is essential. The visa office seeks the invitation letter from the Latvian college while issuing the student visa. Two photocopies of the 10th and 12th mark sheet and certificate are required. For the master’s program, the bachelor level of certificate needs to be attested by the ministry of External Affairs. The work experience letter is required at the time of the interview which is conducted by the visa authorities. The visa application form needs to be completed with all the details. Four passport size photographs need to be furnished. During the stay in Latvia, it is mandatory to be insured against medical emergencies.
