At The PLAB Part 1- Examination
First part of the exam is the computer-based written examination consisting of two hundred single best answers (SBA). It may consist of electrocardiograms (ECGs), photographs or images, and x-rays. The duration of the exam is three hours.
What should you Expect on the Day of Examination?
You will be told what time to arrive, when your place is confirmed. This is usually 10:00 in the UK, but times vary at overseas centers. You can expect to be at the examination center for at least four hours. If you arrive more than half an hour late, you will not be allowed to enter the examination hall. Also, you will not be allowed to leave the hall in the first or last half hour of the examination. You must remain in your seat until the Chief Invigilator says you can leave.
What to Bring on the day of Examination?
Identification They will check your identity at the examination. The following are the only forms of identification they will accept at the center. Whichever you choose, it must be original, current and bear your photograph.

- Your driving license in the UK
- Your identity card in the EU
If you do not have a document confirming your identity, you will be allowed to take the exam, but the Chief Invigilator will take a photograph of you and ask you for a signature. You will be asked to bring your identification document or evidence of the change of name later in the process. Booking confirmation You must also bring the booking confirmation that includes your GMC reference number. If the name on your identification document is different from that on the booking confirmation from the GMC or British Council, validating that you are the same name in the document. They will accept:
- Original marriage certificate
- A declaration letter from the authorized body which approved your medical qualification, and stating that all names are yours.
Stationery You should carry HB pencil, a pencil sharpener, and an eraser.
Other items You may bring a bottle of water in a clear bottle with all labels removed, one or two items of fruit to snack on, medications and a basic ordinary analog watch or digital watch (excluding smartwatches) to the exam center. This must be kept in your pocket or on your desk.
Do not bring You will not need a calculator or any other equipment for the test. You are not permitted to keep any bags, telephones or other electronic devices such as smartwatches with you. Candidates are reminded that the weather in the UK can become very cold during the winter months. You may take a jumper/cardigan in with you. Coats will not be allowed in the examination hall. You must do as the invigilators instruct you. There are no waiting areas for family and friends. They will not be allowed into the venue under any circumstance.
What Conduct is Expected During the Examination?
You should familiarise yourself with the examination regulations and misconduct procedures before attending the exam. As soon as the examination has ended, you must put down your pencil and eraser immediately. You must not amend your paper in any way, even erasing marks you did not intend to make. In common with other examination bodies, they use software designed to detect cheating.
At the PLAB part 2 Examinations?
Part 2 of the test is a practical assessment and takes the form of an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). The part 2 exam is held at the Clinical Assessment Centre in Manchester.
What Should you Expect on the Day?
- When you arrive your documents will be checked and your photograph was taken. You’ll be given a photo card which you’ll need to wear throughout the exam.
- You’ll appear the exam center where lockers are present for you to keep personal things while taking the examination.
- You won’t need to take anything with you into the exam circuit, not even your own medical equipment. Everything you require will be provided.
- You are not allowed to talk to other applicants or write, copy anything about the exam during the exam. Find more about the exam rules.
- Second Part is a practical test and you will find some manikins and other equipment. You will get an actor to perform the role of patient.
- During the exams, an examiner and a remote camera will observe you. You will not be intervening by anyone.

- You should go early to the test center because the candidate will not be allowed if late. To cancel the booked place, a cancellation fee is charged.
What to Bring?

Booking confirmation You have to additionally carry your booking confirmation email. How can you Apply to Take Part 1 in India

How Many Times can you Attempt the PLAB Test?
You can sit Part 1 as many times as you like, whereas you can only take Part 2 of the test four times. If you fail at the fourth attempt you will have to take Part 1 again. When you practice for the exam, and as soon as the cut-off date for application is passed, you shall receive an e-mail from GMC approving your application, your region, place and the date of the exam.
When will you Receive your Results?
- The results of First Part come after four weeks of the test.
- The results of Second Part come after two weeks of the test.
